Healing Arts Council  HAC Fact Sheet

A listing and brief description of each of the Working Groups under the Healing Arts Council are below.  There is a Fact Sheet for the Healing Arts Council and for each of the Working Groups within this Council.  Each Fact Sheet contains a list of the charges, how these charges relate to CRCPD's goals and objectives, and the name and email address of the chairperson.  If you need additional information on a particular working group, such as who the members, advisors and resources are, contact Sue Smith.  The Fact Sheets are accessed by clicking on the Working Group's name.

Brief Description of Healing Arts Council Working Groups:

HAC-EI Emerging Issues Committee  Identifies new environmental radiation issues, including Homeland Security issues, monitors and assimilates requests for information, provides leadership in identifying what type of publications will be developed, assists the council chair in prioritizing goals based on emerging issues that are tied to the CRCPD Strategic Plan Goals and Objectives, makes recommendations for committee or task force membership based on the member's interest in the emerging issue.

H-3 Committee on Medical Practice. Promotes the safe and effective use of x-rays and radioactive material in the healing arts; assists state programs in effecting a national program to reduce the number of unproductive x-rays.

H-4 Committee on Nationwide Evaluation of X-Ray Trends (NEXT). Assists states in collecting NEXT data, and establishes training programs for states that collect NEXT surveys.

H-7 Committee on Quality Assurance in Diagnostic X-Ray. Provides guidance to states on implementing quality assurance programs in diagnostic x-ray.

H-11 Committee on Mammography. Provides guidance to states on conducting inspection programs and other mammography related items addressed by the 1993 Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA).

H-13 Liaison - American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Interacts with ASRT and AART and promotes the exchange of information between the two organizations on areas of mutual interest.

H-15 Liaison - American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM)/American College of Medical Physics (ACMP). Interacts with AAPM and ACMP and promotes the exchange of information between the two organizations on areas of mutual interest.

H-16 Liaison - Joint Commission (JC). Interacts with the JC and promotes the exchange of information between the two organizations on areas of mutual interest.

H-23  Liaison - American College of Radiology (ACR). Interacts with ACR and promotes the exchange of information between the two organizations on areas of mutual interest.

H-25  Task Force on Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)  To develop a "white paper" helpful to radiation regulatory programs on IMRT that describes the general principal of how it works, quality control tests, and patient dosimetry issues, and to develop guidance on shielding design issues, what inspectors could look for during an inspection, and provide written guidance on operator certification issues/qualifications.

H-27  Task Force on MQSA Inspection Frequency.  Provides input to the design of a pilot program under which selected facilities will be inspected at intervals greater than one year to determine if annual inspections of all MQSA facilities are not needed to assure compliance with MQSA regulations; determine the criteria if a facility is eligible to continue to be inspected at intervals greater than one year; recommend to FDA the feasibility of program expansion beyond the original pilot; and provide implementation guidelines.

H-28  Liaison - Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM).  Interacts with SNM and promotes the exchange of information between the two organizations on areas of mutual interest.

H-29 Task Force for Computed Tomography (CT)/Positron Emission Tomography (PET).  Review existing regulations, rationale and/or guidance developed by federal and state agencies and nationally recognized organizations that pertain to positron emission tomography (PET), computed tomography (CT), and PET/CT fused imaging modalities. Provide a written evaluation, with justification, for recommended actions to be taken for updating the SSRs to include adequate health and safety requirements for uses of PET, CT, and/or fused PET/CT imaging modalities.

H-31  Task Force for Monitoring Patient Dose During Fluoroscopy.  Write a white paper inspectors may use as guidance on applying the new FDA regulations on tracking patient radiation exposure during fluoroscopy and develop a handout inspectors can give facilities during their inspection that provides information on, but not limited to, methods of dose reduction, potential doses from various common procedures, and measurements collected during the inspection.

H-32  Task Force for Computed Tomography (CT).  Review and provide comments on the ICRP draft document, Managing Patient Dose in Multi-Detector Computed Tomography and provide a white paper describing the types of computed tomography, pertinent issues regarding mobile CT, CT dose measurements protocols, image quality evaluation, and methods in minimize patient dose, that may be used as guidance during routine inspections of facilities using CT technology.

H-33  Task Force on the Inspection Protocol of Diagnostic X-ray Facilities Using CR/DR Technology.  Write a ‘white paper’ x-ray inspectors may use as guidance during the routine inspection of diagnostic x-ray facilities using CR/DR technology.

H-34  Task Force on Helical IMRT.  Develop a white paper for state radiation control programs discussing the operation and use of helical IMRT technology.

H-35  Liaison - American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.  Interacts with ASTRO and promotes the exchange of information between the two organizations on areas of mutual interest.

H-36 Task Force on E-Brachytherapy H-36 is tasked with developing a white paper that will help radiation regulatory programs on e-brachytherapy that describes the general principle of how it works, quality control test,  patient dosimetry issues; guidance documents for inspectors that includes what to look for during inspections of e-brachytherapy devices; and guidance for registering/licensing of e-brachytherapy devices and on operator training/certification issues.

H-37 Liaison - American Board of Radiology (ABR).  Interacts with the ABR and promotes the exchange of information between the two organizations on areas of mutual interest.
