Report of the Training
Commission
By Kathy

The Training Commission (TC) held its first meeting in Hyannis in
conjunction with the annual meeting of the New England Radiological Health
Committee November 18-21. This was a wonderful opportunity to gather
information on a successful regional organization and view the opportunities
for training via this organization (one of the charges of this Commission).
Meeting organizers arranged for the TC to run an afternoon workshop on
training, so we had a chance to propose various training options to staff
members of several states at one time. The feedback was helpful, and we
believe we are on the right track.
The TC consists of the Chair and two members: Debbie Borden from Texas and
Dwayne Gardner from Connecticut. (I need to point out that while the
Commission itself is small, we are counting on help from other members on
various SHORT-TERM projects.) We met with Jill Lipoti for one afternoon and
discussed several issues. We discussed the possibility of training in
conjunction with the annual meeting (in addition to the MQSA continuing
education course already planned), scholarships, commercially-available
training, pros and cons for various training mechanisms, and how we should
cover training gaps as quickly as possible.
Several states have informed me that they already have training programs
for certain aspects of their program. Some states have self-study guides,
others have outlines for talks, and still others have complete training
packages that include overheads and tests. Very shortly, every state will
receive a questionnaire requesting you to identify any training materials you
may have on-hand. We hate completing questionnaires ourselves, so we are
integrating as many "check-off boxes" as possible. In addition to
training material, we will be asking if you have any "canned"
presentations on issues that would be available for other states to use.
Each survey returned will be incorporated into the training page (off the
CRCPD webpage) as we receive them back. The more responses we get back, the
easier it will be to share resources.
